What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth, also known as the “third molars,” are the last teeth to develop within the mouth. Because of this, sometimes there isn’t enough room for them to erupt through the gum line, causing impaction. Impacted wisdom teeth are common and can be addressed with dental extractions. Additionally, even when the wisdom teeth come in, they can be difficult to reach, making them much more susceptible to cavities and disease. Removal may be the best option for many patients.

How are wisdom teeth removed?

Two types of extractions can be performed for wisdom teeth. If they have erupted through the gum line and are being removed, our team performs what is called a simple extraction. This is done by carefully wedging the tooth with unique instruments and removing it from the bone in just a few minutes. For wisdom teeth that are impacted, or stuck, below the gum line, surgical extractions are needed. This is an oral surgery that requires the dentist to access the tooth within the gum tissue. The area is then sutured following removal, and patients will need to carefully follow their aftercare instructions to ensure that the area heals appropriately.

Are extractions painful?

Extractions are done with proper anesthetics in the local area, as well as sedatives for patients who are concerned about anxiety. Afterward, some patients may have some discomfort, but this can be addressed for a day or two with over-the-counter pain medications.
