Tooth Sealants
Tooth sealants are a clear or white plastic which are placed in the grooves of the biting surfaces of back teeth. Back teeth have deep grooves and pits which are very difficult to keep clean.
Plaque, which is a nearly invisible film of bacteria and food, collects in these grooves. Sealants are an important part of a preventive dental care program.
Fluoride Treatments
Fluoride is a naturally occurring element that can help to prevent tooth decay by strengthening teeth. When fluoride is taken internally during tooth formation, it becomes incorporated into the enamel, making the tooth less prone to decay. Once a tooth has been formed, however, fluoride taken internally no longer has an effect.
External treatments such as professional applications, fluoridated toothpastes and rinses, though, do have an effect. Like any nutrient, fluoride is beneficial in the proper amounts, but harmful in excessive amounts. More is not better. It is important to know how much fluoride is being ingested.
About three-fourths of American cities add additional fluoride to the water supply for the prevention of tooth decay. Other areas have naturally fluoridated water. Some geographical areas, including many in Oregon, do not have fluoridated water. For this reason, Oregon has a much higher decay rate. Let us help you determine if fluoride treatments can help you prevent tooth decay.
